A minor chip on your tooth enamel can sometimes be repaired with a simple amalgam or composite resin filling. Yet larger fractures, from a blow to the face, accidental fall, or other forms of oral trauma might compromise a large amount of the tooth enamel.

Even if the fractured tooth doesn’t cause distress or heightened sensitivity, you should still strongly consider having it repaired at Dr. Eric Weinstock’s endodontic practice in Canton, Massachusetts. The longer you delay the more likely it is that the bacteria in your mouth will start to exploit the damaged enamel causing a dangerous area of tooth decay.

Significant dental fractures often need to be repaired by a crown. This piece of dental work is hollow to allow it to be anchored on a post-like abutment formed from the core structures of the tooth.

Dr. Eric Weinstock forms the abutment by removing all the tooth enamel leaving behind a small post of healthy dentin. Dr. Eric Weinstock will then make an impression of the abutment and the surrounding teeth. This also includes the teeth in your bite pattern that will match up with the final crown.

The impression will be sent to an off-site dental lab where your permanent crown will be created. A temporary crown is then cemented over the abutment to protect it. You will need to come back for a short, second appointment when your permanent crown is ready. The temporary crown will be removed and Dr. Eric Weinstock will cement the final crown in place with a strong dental adhesive.
