A dental abscess is a serious dental problem that should be treated right away. It is an infection at the root of the tooth and it is most often caused by untreated tooth decay and dental trauma, like a broken or chipped tooth. When tooth decay and trauma open a section of the tooth enamel, bacteria enter the opening and attack the center of the tooth, which is called the pulp. The infection causes severe pain and it can even spread to the bones of the supporting tooth.

Symptoms of an abscessed tooth typically include a severe and continuous toothache, a fever, pain when chewing, tooth sensitivity, a bitter taste in the mouth, and bad breath. Other symptoms include discomfort, nausea, redness and swelling of the gums, and an open and draining sore on the gums.

To treat this issue, you need to call Cobb Corner Endodontics, P.C. and schedule an appointment with Dr. Eric Weinstock. When you come in for your appointment, he will drain the infection with root canal therapy. Your dentist might also treat the tooth by extracting it and allowing drainage through the socket. The last way to treat it is by making an incision in the swollen gum tissue. After treatment, your dentist will prescribe you an antibiotic to help fight the infection.
